Yes SAM you are quite right things do move on but I think most would agree that there are some 'junior' sides who would more than hold their own not only in our league but maybe even at a higher level. Sadly the club do not have the money/large financial backer they had in the 90s either to hand out large signing on fees and wages. As for the song think Alan R hit it on the head when he said that it had meant something to Talbot and maybe not appropriate to HFC, I for one wouldnt want to sign a song which had its origins taking the mick out of someone who had a disability, as you said some things move on. Maybe our team poet could pen something unique to Huntly FC ?

| I think we all had a laugh about the song on the way home but here's another thought. How are the team going to feel if they hear their fans belting this song out at every game when it will inevitably bring back memories of the day we went crashing out of the Scottish Cup?
I agree we need more songs but let's be more original and get something that might actually motivate the players?

well, we've had a s*** response to this one with only two votes since Sunday. if we keep getting poor responses to these polls the game of the game poll vote will go to the player rater panel to vote on.

| As Number 7 has pointed out the Eeka peeka song originates from one of our supporters, but this letter appeared in our local newspaper the Cumnock Chronicle. It's a hoot and believe it or not some people thought it was true.
EEKA PEEKA PUKKA PO. THE TRUE MEANING
Sir With the 26th of September looming and Talbot’s long journey to capture the Scottish senior cup about to start, I would like to lay to rest the myth about Talbot’s terracing chant “Eeka Peeka Pukka Po” and promote its true meaning. This chant has been heard at many grounds, and no doubt by May next year it will be thundering through the terraces of Hampden as Talbot take the field against a hapless SPL club who will be just happy to have turned up. Through your excellent publication I would like to point out the origins of the chant and its history, because I would like to invite the less chosen people from our area to know our famous song and its importance, so when that wondrous club called Auchinleck Talbot do battle with the seniors the full district will be behind the “Junior Galactos” urging them on to further greatness.
“Eeka peeka pukka po” hails from New Zealand and came about when a little known historical tour by Talbot took them to the said country in 1921. The NZFA were about to celebrate their 30th anniversary and were desperate to attract a big named club to take on a New Zealand select in Wellington in a glamour game. Alex Dechat a Belgian national was the then president of the association and had a leaning towards the Belgian giants Anderlecht and using his clout instructed his secretary Tom Burrell to invite Anderlecht to the capital.
Tom who was an ex-shot firer from Blantyre was a bit hard of hearing due to years of explosions down the mine and misheard the name Anderlecht the result being two weeks later the invitation landed through the letterbox of Harry Gibson in Auchinleck. Harry the Talbot secretary couldn’t believe it when this invite which was for an all expenses trip for 16 players and 4 officials proved to be bone-fide and within two weeks the Talbot were leaving Southampton on the refrigeration ship “Shropshire” on a 13 day voyage to Wellington.
When the “Shropshire” reached Wellington port the mix up came to light when the bemused Talbot contingent were met at the bottom of the gangplank by Alex Duchet and the Wellington brass band blasting out “The Brabanconne” (Belgian national anthem). The local paper the Capital Times were quick to pounce on the mix up and had the headline “”Who’s Talbot? Scots involved in big mix up” It also reported Alex Duchet looked like a Romanian who had just been handed the keys for a council house in Belfast. After a lengthy meeting between the NZFA, Duchart and the Talbot officials it was agreed that Talbot would take on the select team at the Wellington Arena and hopefully the Auchinleck team would put up a good show.
On the day of the match the New Zealand team made up of ex-pats were escorted onto the field by a Maori warrior while the Talbot took to the pitch with a committeeman dressed in full national Auchinleck dress of steel toe capped boots, boilersuit, sandwich box and ceremonial vacuum flask. When reaching the centre spot the Talbot players were then met with a line of frightening Maori’s who had padded white neck collars and two hooked sticks (This attire was later adopted in Auchinleck where the best dressed are rewarded with a car or financial remuneration, its mostly donned for a trip to the doctor). The gathered tribesmen then started a wild dance called the Powhiri which is a form of Haka and as they danced they bellowed “Eeka peeka Pukka Po” which translated meant “Oh handsome men of Auchinleck we fear for our wives and daughters due to your virility.
You are men that would die of shame if not involved in manual labour”. This was a magnificent honour for the Talbot as they adopted the chant, and managed a creditable 3-3 draw in the match itself. That evening Chief Kaita Mahetau (The big potato) summoned the Whiriwhiri Pakepakeha (Chosen people) to his longhouse for a feast of enormous proportions. The Chief and Harry Gibson hit it of straight away. The chief showed him his pet millipede measuring a foot long while Harry showed the chief a picture of something with three teeth and a hundred legs and can only be found in the East Ayrshire which was called a Methadone queue. Harry also gifted the chief a set of sunglasses so that he could look at the silverware in the Talbot trophy cabinet. The adventure was soon to end and two days later Talbot left Wellington port with the brass band trumpeting out the Liberty X hit “Work just a little bit” and returned to a warm welcome back in Silver City with many memories and a new club song.
So sir the myth’s come to a close and the Talbot terracing chant’s origins are now known. It doesn’t matter if you are not one of the Chosen People, just learn the words and join us at Hampden at the end of May. Of course you won’t be able to sit with us but we could allocate an area of the national stadium for the less fortunate. EEKA PEEKA PUKKA PO! Goldie Mc Black Name and address supplied.
