Today we faced a tricky encounter against high flying Cove BC United which was played at McRobert Park, Aberchirder. Cove having won all of their previous league matches with some style seemed well up for it, to repeat one of their players quotes pre match "Cmon we cant let these bunch a teuchters beat us" was the cry. The match began brightly for us and the lads were bearing up well in the battle for early territorial advantage, the nearest for us being a James Brooks drive which came back off the crossbar only for Cove to break up the field and to see the crossbar deny them also. Cove however did find themselves in the lead when a freekick from the edge of the box was swung in too high for Jordan to handle and the ball ended up in the net 0-1. Credit to our lads who refused to let their heads go down as they battled to get back into the match, matching Cove in every department with only poor passing as we entered the final third letting us down at times. H-T 0-1.
The half time brief was to reassure the lads of their own potential and to start to believe it, and boy did it work when second half the lads took a real stranglehold of the match and saw them mostly camped in the Cove half reducing the visitors to only a few half chances which were well dealt with via steely defending and good handling by Jordan in goal. At the other end a long range shot by Aidan Bowie was well held by the Cove Keeper and Andrew Munro and James Brooks were now finding success in the wide area's, eventually paying off when good work by left back Aidan Bowie played in Mark Johnston to hit a superb equaliser 1-1. This shook the Cove defence with Huntly now well on top as Darren Davidson, sent on to play in the wide right area worked hard to get on the end of a loose ball and with his first touch , shot towards goal only for the rebound to land at Mark Johnston's feet ,whose superb finish left the keeper with no chance 2-1. Cove now in tatters with misbelief (finding themselves behind to a bunch of teuchters ) battled on only to find themselves hit with the killer blow when good work from Billy Blanchard played in the now rampant Mark Johnston who ran in on goal and slipped his shot beyond the keeper to complete a superb hatrick and to clinch a well deserved three points for us after a hard working and excellent second half performance from the lads.
Man of the match , well there were many contenders with good performances all over the park, a superb hatrick for Mark Johnston, another brilliant midfield performance from Billy Blanchard also running close but for us the award this week goes to Lee Inglis for a flawless performance in defence , breaking up so many Cove attacks well aided by his fellow defenders Richie, Jack and Aidan and his use of the ball was excellent throughout, receiving rave views from a depleted Cove coach at the end. Overall a big result for us and we hope the lads will now start believing how good they can be as a team and use this result as a springboard for more of the same. The only down side today was how little time one or two of the subs got on today, I'm very self concience of this, but lads stick with us and your chance to perform will come sooner rather than later. Well Done Lads.
