Apart from dodgy refereeing in the 3rd period I thought the loons did really well! The scoreline flattered the u14s, but I can't criticise them as they have had only 1 game & 1 pre-season training session.
Lots of good things about the u13s:
They kept fighting for the ball right up 'til the end. That mentality will see them well in the coming season. Never, ever give up!
Some very good passing & movement with some good one-twos especially on the right.
Good positional play with the team generally keeping it's shape - a vast difference to this time last year!
Things to watch out for (in my humble opinion):
Need to develop a 'killer instinct' in front of goal. Still taking too many touches in the box. 18yard box? Shoot!
Defending right on the half-way line - fine if your back line are alert & pacey, but I think initially, Mike, that the loons might pay by defending like that in the early part of the season. I would be inclined to have a couple of them sit back a wee bit. Just my opinion, mind!
Mind yer language! I had to have words with one or two.
Play the whistle & don't argue with the ref - he or she is not going to change their mind. Leave the shouting to Mike - he's better at that!! Some iffy decisions will go against you, and some will go your way, but keep playing even though you think it was a blatant foul for you. If the ref hasn't seen it they could get through and score!
Throw-ins. Keep yer feet on the ground. Silly to give possession away for that. It's simple stuff.
I think they will do really well this season. Great bunch o loons who are prepared to work for each other. The lads who played u13 last year have all come on really well pre-season. Keep it up lads & good luck!
