Does the messages link at the top of the page inform you of a message in your inbox? Or is it just a case of move the cursor over the link?

It should inform you when you have a message

you should receive an e-mail (providing it's a valid address and not made up) whenever someone sends you a private message.

when you do have a new Private Message the header buttons change from Messages to INBOX
